Maine Water urges communities to support pantries

Company donates $5,000 to five area organizations

Screen Shot 2014-12-26 at 5.12.20 PM(Saco, Maine) The Maine Water Company has donated $1,000 each to the Stone Soup Pantry in Biddeford, Friends of Community Action Food Pantry in Biddeford, the Saco Food Pantry, the Old Orchard Beach Community Food Pantry and the Scarborough Food Pantry. Judy Wallingford, president of Maine Water, said she appreciates all that the local food pantries do for the community, and that support for these organizations needs to be year-round.

“Although national economic numbers imply an improved economy, at the street level here in Maine the pinch is still on,” Wallingford said. “All you have to do is visit one of our local pantries, talk to the great volunteers there, and you’ll understand instantly how badly local children and families need this helping hand.”

The Stone Soup Food Pantry is an all-volunteer organization, and is located on the lower level of 180 Main Street. The phone number is 207-283-0055. It is open on Mondays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The pantry supplies mostly produce and bread products, and when available, some furniture and clothing.

Friends of Community Action Food Pantry ( is located at 162 Elm Street in Biddeford. It is open Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Don Bisson is the manager, and the phone number is 282-4771.

The Saco Food Pantry is a nonprofit, 501 (c (3) organization that accepts cash and physical donations of food. It is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and the last Tuesday of every month from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. For more information visit:

The Old Orchard Community Food Pantry is located at 155 Saco Avenue, and its phone number is 207-937-8094. The pantry is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until noon, and Monday evenings from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 203, Old Orchard Beach, 04064.

The Scarborough Food Pantry is located at 1st Congregational Church Parish House, 167 Black Point Road. The pantry accepts donations Tuesdays and Thursday from 9:00am to noon, and its primary contact number is 207-883-2342.
